In 1975 Srila Prabhupada instructed his dear disciple Gour Govinda Swami to build a beautiful temple in the Orissan state capital of Bhubaneswar, and told him that he himself would come to lay the foundation stone. On January the 18th, 1977 Srila Prabhupada stayed on the Iskcon property for 17 days, in a small mud hut with a thatched roof, that Gour Govinda Swami had himself built. On the occasion of Lord Nityananda's holy appearance day festival, 2nd February, Srila Prabhupada laid the foundation stone for the temple he predicted would be one of the best Iskcon temples in the world. Even though it was in an out-of-the-way place - a patch cleared from the jungle - Srila Prabhupada also said that the temple would one day be at the centre of Bhubaneswar city. This was his 108th temple, and also, the final temple he founded. 

Around fourteen years later, on Lord Nityananda's appearance day in 1991, the temple was opened, and the deities of Sri Sri Krishna Balarama, Jagannath Baladeva Subhadra, and Gour Nitai installed in a spectacular ceremony, which was attended by devotees from all over the world. Srila Gour Govinda Swami continued to live in the mud hut he built for Srila Prabhupad, until he himself left this world in 1996. 

Whilst the government destroyed the most sacred building to widen their road,  Srila Gour Govinda's samadhi can be found here, and is now situated in his Smriti Mandir on the left side of the main temple.

Gundicha Temple

A few kilometres along the road from the Krishna Balaram Temple is the Gundicha temple. During Ratha yatra, the chariots are pulled from the Iskcon main temple to Iskcon Gundicha temple, where the deities of Jagannath Baladeva and Subhadra reside until their return to the mai temple, in the Bahuda yatra.

On the Gundicha temple's top floor is the temple room, which is where Jagannath stays when he comes after Ratha yatra, before returning to their Nayapalli Temple. Below the temple room are two more levels, including a hall where weddings and programs are held. Also at the Temple is the bakery, and also a confectioner’s.

Extension Centres of Iskcon Bhubaneswar

Jeypore, a city 520 km to the south east of Bhubaneswar has a regular Nama Hatta centre, which is an extension of the Temple.

Another Nama Hatta centre is at Nayagarh where land has been donated to the Temple by the father of Sri Vaikuntha Murti prabhu.

Iskcon Boudh was established towards the end of 2021 and has a couple of brahmacaris stationed there, under the direction of  Sri Krsna Sevak das.

Atala - The Temple Farm and Goshala

The Temple farm at Atala now has nine acres of land for both the goshala, and that the devotees are currently using to grow flowers and Tulasi for Sri Sri Krishna Balarama and the other Deities at Bhubaneswar. 200 truck-loads of good soil have also been deposited on the land to raise it up so that it can also be used for growing fruits and vegetables. At the moment, fifteen devotees are based on the land. Sri Premananda and Satwatpati prabhus just met with an architect regarding the construction of a large new goshala building. In the future, it is planned that the Temple bakery, which is currently at Gundicha, will be moved here.
